Family Adoption Digital Platform - A Digital Health initiative by Yenepoya (Deemed to be University)
Indian Medical Graduate (IMG) should recognize "health for all" as a national goal and be able to fulfill his/her societal obligations towards the realization of this goal.IMG needs to acquire few critical competencies like demonstrate knowledge about social determinants of health, serve the community as physician of first contact, develop social responsiveness, and provide preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative services to the people. These competencies require community oriented training through experiential learning by engaging with various community stakeholders.
Introduction of Family Adoption Program:
In view of this National Medical Commission (NMC) introduced family adoption program. This program envisages that medical students will acquire these competencies by adopting 5 families and following them throughout their graduation course.
In India around 65% of population resides in rural areas. Geographical accessibility, affordability, ignorance, financial hardship and burden of diseases are still challenges in rural and urban slum areas in our country as the healthcare services are skewed towards urban set up and medical graduates also prefer to provide services in urban India.
Family adoption program aims to provide experiential learning opportunity to IMG towards community based healthcare thereby enhance equity in health.
Under department of community medicine every medical student will adopt minimum 5 families and will make 20 visits during their first, second and third professional years. They will assess the health problems and health needs of all the individuals of the 5 families and monitor the health trajectory under the guidance of the mentor (Faculty) and with the help of the interdisciplinary health team.
They will also coordinate and organize multi-specialty health camps, screening camps, awareness programs on prevailing health problems and environment protection. Students are expected to facilitate the health care utilization by the rural and marginalized population and the adopted family members. They will act as a bridge between the community and the healthcare delivery system.
This will help them to develop social responsiveness by understanding how people live in rural and urban slum areas, what type of social and financial hardship they experience?
This is a mandatory program introduced from 2021 MBBS admission batch. Guidelines for implementation have been given by the NMC.
Integrating software solutions i.e. electronic data capture tools and digital platform with decision support tools, health alerts will help to realize the objectives of family adoption program and facilitate continuum of care and health for all.
Software solutions will enable to get real-time data, understand health trajectory by generating longitudinal data.
Digital solutions will enable to move from survey to surveillance and pen-paper based data to real-time electronic health data capture.
This will enable to provide electronic health records for all the individuals this will facilitate health seeking and health care utilization.
